Am I risking it ?

I'd rather wait till 60,000 miles. After all, its £350 to have new cambelt (+ the water bottle ect) with a top specialist garage... and quoted more at VW themselves.

Its a VW Golf, had since new. My own feeling is VW is being extremely conservative saying to change cambelt every 4 years, even if little mileage done...... or am I being too cynical ?

I don't really wanna pay for something that doesn't need doing, or has low risk of breaking before 60,000 miles.

I would like some advice - it's always been a goal to own a WORKING VW Bus. I had some auto classes in high school, which wouldn't help me now. So before I buy one, I would like information - common problems and what ideally should I know how to fix. What year is reccomended? Any other useful information you could give me - other than calling me a hippie and telling me to get something else? Thanks!

Does anybody know how an electrical micro-switch in door breaks? I recently got my 2002 Jetta Wagon back from its 60K check-up at the dealership and the passenger-side door no longer registers that it is closed. In short, the door light remains on, the alarm won't activate, and the car is always telling me that the door is "open." I've been told by the dealership that my electrical micro-switch is broken and that this is a common problem.

Does anybody know if this "common problem" is generally caused by some act, or whether it is a complete coincidence that I took my car in for a 60K check-up and got it back with a broken electrical micro-switch on the passenger-side. The dealership said the mechanic was "cleaning the latches" when it broke. I honestly have no idea what that means. Thanks for your help.
