£40 labour??? Its a 4 hour job to properly strip down and rebuild. Minimum of £100 labour+head gasket set+oil and filter+anti freeze+timing belt+skimming.

If you can get change out of £250 your VERY lucky.

Put simply I suspect you have an oil leak from where the oil feed goes through the the headgasket and on into the cylinderhead. This is usually quite close to the edge of the head face. Looks like someone is making a big deal about it. You can have the following done 1 Visual inspection by someone knowledgable 2 Compression test 3 Cylinder leakage test 4 Block test which checks for combustion gases in coolant 5 Cooling system pressure test 1 4 and 5 are all cheap and simple to do.

just to replace a head gasket you are looking at about £40 for gasket set , £40 labour, but remember if head gasket gone then you may have to get the head skimmed,£60

Don't know if this helps or not but my cousin had to get his head gasket replaced on this rover it cost him £400 (including labour)

backstreet price? Okay,I'll do the job in two days.You buy all the parts,have all the tools i'll need on hand,and a case of cold beer.250 bucks.Oh yeah,and i ain't responsible for anything that gets lost or broke!! Really,find a reputable shop,blow the moths out of your wallet and get the job done right!!

Get a gasket and some tools and a manual and do it yourself easy job !!!

Are you sure your problem is head gasket ??? NEVER replace ANY part till you know the problem.
