Hello here's an interesting one. My Golf mark 4 has a tow hitch, one of those fancy VW "removable " ones. I normally leave it on, in the belief that this will protect the rear end of the car from low speed "shunts". Parking parallel to the kerb is the normal mode where I live.

But recently I have been thinking that if the tow hitch is hit, the force would be transferred to the structure of the car and the damage could be even GREATER ( and more expensive) than if there was no tow hitch. The rear bumpers are designed to absorb energy, after all.

Does anyone have any opinions either way?

I already tried Kelly Blue Book, & it only went up to 1987. Obviously, no Beetles made then. Any & all information welcomed! Thanks!

Obviously a mechanic would be the smartest and most expensive way to have the in-line fuel filter changed. I'm requesting info from someone who might know how to "fix it myself". (or have a male friend fix it).

I am original owner of 2001 new beetle. No prior mechanical problems at all. I got bad gas. Car ran about 30 miles until gas ran out. I wanted to run out all bad gas but car did get completely empty and run out. I put new gas in but now it won't start at all. I tried to find the "special tool" required to remove in-line fuel filter but auto parts stores don't carry tool or filter for 2001. What's up with that? Does anyone have suggestions ?

Also, how do you do a compression test ?

Not hard to figure out that I'm a female right.

The fuel consumption seems to be up I am allowing for the fact that i am doing a lot of city driving now the car has just done a run from the UK to the Balkans and is here now and never missed a beat all the way here. The problem has only just started to become obvious and again it is at startup only. I have been told that it maybe a rich fuel mixture. How do you adjust this? Oil use is not heavy just small regular top ups every 6 weeks. There are new plugs and leads filters oil and air and is being run on 98 octane fuel and had a full service a month ago before the trip. Many thanks for any input you may have.

The center nut is as tight as I can get it, but the cotter pin is missing. I believe this is also causing my brakes to drag. What do I need to do?
