They are solid, very comfortable and very safe cars.
I would argue that the mk4 Jetta (like the 2001 you are considering) effectively raised the standards for compact cars and forced everyone else to raise the benchmarks for touch-feel quality of the interior, NVH reduction and standard features.
They are NOT, however, going to be as reliable as a trusty little Toyota or Honda. Some would say they make up for it with some European class and flavor and a more substantial feel though. Bottom line is if you really love the Jetta and you appreciate the difference then go for it. If you really just want the most reliable possible point A to point B machine and don't care how cool it looks, then get yourself a nice little Corolla or something.

My Jetta has been very reliable over the years and milage (95,000 so far).
it has never left me stranded and has started EVERY time i turn the key. I have made some modifications that are causing me some problems...but they are problems that i created.
I have a 2003 Jetta GLi with the 24v VR6 motor....it has been bullet proof, and everything i have read about this motor confirms my belief that it is a very reliable well running engine. i have used synthetic oil from the start and that may have something to do with it, but i cant be 100% sure.
The car recently did a 5 week 8,000 mile tour of the US with absolutly no problems.
I also have had experience with a 91 Jetta and a 96 Jetta, both ran very well and i only had to deal with wear and tear type items

As a VW Jetta owner, and 'semi-pro' mechanic, I want to let you know that, yes, they are good cars.
However. I do not want you to think that they are perfect cars. There is no such thing as a perfect car. ALL cars *can* have problems. Most problems with cars are, however, due to improper maintenance.
As for "how much would a 2001 jetta cost" there are several variables. Are you going to go for a 30+ mpg automatic transmission wagon, or are you going to get the 45+ mpg, manual trans, diesel sedan?
GL package? GLS package? Sunroof? Monsoon audio? 17" wheels? how many miles?
Cheapest jetta 2001 on cars.com right now is $4,488.
Blue, 4 door, stick, 81,000 miles.
I'd be cautious of that one.
The most expensive one is $18,995
And this guy is NUTS..

Jettas are good reliable vehicles. The cost of a Jetta would depend on mileage, options and condition.

If you can, I would go for at the oldest a 2004. Anything prior to then is a little iffy on the reliability scale. After than all VWs are fantastic.
I have a 07 Jetta and I love it. It's a blast to drive.

VW builds a nice, reliable car. Just like any car however they all have thier little quircks. Try to find a low mileage one that appears like it was taken care of then run the ser # on vehicks.com
