As a seasoned vw mechanic for the last 15+ years I am here to tell you that you are suffering from a classic problem that alot of acvw owners have had. The problem with points and condensor setup is that when replacing them you have to set the dwell on them as well as the gap to the points. skipping this procedure almost always prematurly burns the points out. Iam assuming that you dont know how to do this so to keep it simple you should just invest in a set of electronic points. Their low in cost and once installed you never touch them again. Good luck i hope this helps.

Check to see if rotor thats the part in the middle that moves the points open and closed jiggle it around to see if solid or a lot of slop..There should be no slop..
You maybe able to get a slightly newer distributor that is electronic,, it'll make a world of difference

Ahhh, points...if you drive the van frequently, you will end up changing the points frequently. You want to change the condensors (the little metal cylinder looking things that have a wire(s) going to the points). They may not be doing their job, and providing more electricity to your points, burning then out faster...

the condenser works as an electrical shock absorber [ acting as a ground...without actually being one]...its job is to save the points from burning out prematurely.....also check the distributor shaft for bearing wear, & make sure the distributor housing itself is grounded properly!

I would replace the condensor, which prevents arcing that deteriorates the contact points.
