The only turbo versions of the MkII and MkIII Golfs were the turbodiesels.

The MkIV added a 1.8 20v turbo version of the GTi with 150bhp. There was also a later version with 180bhp and slightly more aggressive front styling (shared with the 150bhp TDi).

However, there was also a non-turbo 1.8 20v GTi with 125bhp, later replaced by the 115bhp 2.0 8v GTi (because the 1.8 20v didn't have the torque that MkIII 2.0 GTi owners expected when they traded up to a MkIV).

The only sure way to tell the 1.8 20v turbo from the non-turbo is to look under the bonnet for the turbocharger and associated plumbing.

Ye the gti is a 1.8 turbo - same engine as the TT, Leon, A3......

The gti 2 litre is to be avoided at all costs as it is only 115bhp so any sportyish Saxo or Corsa is going to rinse it!

You should consider the Leon Cupra R.. it has more power than the golf as standard and an ECU remap will take it up to 260bhp and give you a nice 5.5 second 0-60!

VW dont make a mk3 Golf with a turbo either, only a 2 litre 8 & 16 valve and the 2.8 VR6.
