It's a 1998 S reg mark 4 Golf. I'm trying to replace the gear gaiter but have to remove the gear knob first. I've tried twisting, pulling, pulling and turning but nothing seems to work! Help please!

If it's like the Passat it is held on by a one time clamp, you have to remove the surround and lift up the shift boot and then you'll see it clamped round the plastic bottom of the shift knob. I cut my old one off with side-cutters and replaced it with twisted wire that I got from a craft store.

I was replacing the shift boot too, got the new one from Poland of all places, much better quality than the original.

check if the gear knob has a colour separation in it, if so the centre part may unclip/pull away from the outer part revealing a screw/torque head. if not check under the galter cover for small screws on the bottom of the gear knob.
if this doesn't work try referring to the cars manual/dealer website

to remove the knob you pull the boot up from the centre console this can be a bit tricky but pull it up from the edge and slightly in as it has a plastic ring holding it in then you ll see a silver clip that has been crimped either loosen or cut off clip a and pull it off

my old 1980s VW Golf used to just twist off anti-clockwise... give it a go.
