Buying & Selling - August 2006

My husband and I bought a little Hoopty cuz we needed another car. We got it from a dealer who sells cheap little used cars. We bought the car "as seen". so I'm not sure if we can do anything. Anyway... when we drove home we realized that the odometer and the spedometer don't work. We didn't really look at it when we testdrove it, cuz we just drove around the corner and we focused more on the running of the car. What do we do now though? Isn't it against the law to sell a car where the odometer doesn't work? Well, we bought is as seen, but if he sold it to us illegally, then he HAS to fix it, doesn't he?!
What can we do?
I need to know for sure if it's illegal or not!!!
Thanx

I put $1000.00 down on a car and now the finance company wont finance me. Is the dealer obligated to return my down payment? I am located in California.

I have a 2001 Jeep grand cherokee piece if %$#543 that I bought 3 months ago. Ever since I bought it has had nothing but problems, which is costing me alot. I want to get a new car, but I need to stay around a certain monthly payment. What do think I should get. 2001 BMW 325ci with over 50,000 miles on it. A 2003 Nissan 350Z with under 50,000 miles on it. Or a Mercedes 240 2002 with about 50,000. I am not sure, I don't want high repair cost. A 2 seaters is cool, but then again I don't really drive anyone around. I don't know, what do you think. Please God help.

If all the vital stats (miles, year, price) are almost similar for a used Jetta and Corolla, which car is better from a resale value perspective? The Jetta is navy blue in color with sun roof and Corolla is golden again with sun roof.

Okay. My new car is sitting in my driveway, and the paperwork is done. However, the $23,000 wire transfer has not gone through because of a misquote. I was guaranteed $9500 minimum for my trade, over the phone. The entire sale has been handled via internet and phone. My mother is the one actually purchasing the car with cash, but in the paperwork she received with the trade amount, it says $8500, not $9500. So rather than the $23,000 she expected, its $24,000. I know with that kind of cash, $1000 doesnt seem like a big deal, but obviously it is. Not only to my mother, but to the dealership. The are claiming that they quoted $9500 based on a 2003 vehicle. Well, its a 2002, and I know for a fact that that is not my miscommunication. Regardless, the dealership refuses to budge to get the sale. They are saying they will be taking a loss by attaching another $1000 to my trade. But my mother says this is not what she agreed to, and will not send the money until corrected.....

What could possibly be the reasons why a dealer sells a car at a price lower than that displayed on Kelly Blue Book (KBB)? Everything about the car (e.g., miles) are the same for the dealer and the KBB. The dealer gives the VIN number for vehicle history check but I've not looked at it yet. Assuming the car wasn't involved in a major accident, what could potentially be the reasons?

I'll be turning 18 next month, moving into my own apartment, and I will need a car to get back and forth to work and school. I'll be financially independent, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about getting a vehicle when I have no credit. I'll be making about $1500 a month, and can afford about a $300-$350 car payment. I'm just not exactly sure how to go about the process of finding a vehicle, and figuring out how to pay for it when I don't have credit. Can anyone help?
