when I got hired for a job at an AMC theater yesterday. One of the managers was helping me and another new hire out, and she was saying that 0 would have the government take more out now, but give me more back later, or something like that, so I just claimed 0. Was that the best thing to do? I'm an 18-year-old still living with my parents (in California), and I'm a full-time college student

Some people say that it's better to just claim 1, take a bigger paycheck, and deposit some of it into a savings account with interest, and just pay the government back with that if I owe them. If I claim 0, then I'm practically giving the government an interest-free loan. The savings account I have is WaMu and I believe it's .25% (a month, I think)...is that gonna yield much over time?

Any professional advice?

The final pay period for my company this year is 12/28/07. We will be payed for this work on 1/4/08. Should it be on my w2? We were told our W2's would only include up to out 12/21/07 paydate (which was work through 12/14/07). That doesn't seem right...Can anyone tell me what the IRS take on this is?

I was a temp that went full-time - when I was a temp, I was paid weekly, and went to perm, and will now be paid every other week - I would think the difference would be immaterial, but someone said more taxes will be taken out, because that will put me in a higher tax bracket.

Let me preface our financial situation. I currently make in the area of 30k/yr and my spouse is near $23k/yr. My deductions are taken out based on being married while my wife has her deductions taken out at the married but higher, single person rate. Basically I want to know if this is the best way to ensure we wont owe money at the end of the year?

I had no clue that some states don't charge tax on TP but I just saw on Yahoo homepage that the little old lady won her fight against KMart for taxing toilet paper! What state did that happen in? Do I have to pay tax on TP in Missouri?

Does anyone know what the chart is called that I am looking for or a link directly to it? It shows how much an individual makes and the tax bracket that they would be placed in, the tax they pay and the percentage of what the return might be. I dont know if I have all the info correct but it would be similiar to what I explained. thanks for any help!

i recently adjusted my benefits due to a life event and also added a $1000 dependend care spending account. i thought it was for next year becasue i will be enrolling my daughter to a pre-school by january. what i didn't realize is that my changes took effect immediately. now they have started to deduct money from my salary for the depedent care spending. how can i recover this? i don't have any receipts from a pre-school yet. its holiday season and i will be $1000 less. worse is, i don't want the gov't to forfeit that.

If I earn a certain amount of money and have a third of it taken out before taxes for health care, dental, vision, 401K, and a few other things, is my annual income the original amount or the amount left after deductions?

In other words can I legally claim that I earn 1/3rd less than my original amount before deductions?

My parents live with me in NJ and they have been living with me since I purchased the house 3 years ago. I am on SSDI and receive alimony/child support. They in turn they receive $2100 in SS. My mother and I are on the deed to the house and she is on the mortgage by herself. The reason she is on the mortgage without me is because I couldn't be on the mortgage because of my bad credit. But I do make all the mortgage payments plus pay all of the other major bills. Their money pays all of their personal bills. They do help me with some of my bills, but small ones: cable, newspaper, garbage collection. I have never tried to claim them before and the only reason that I'm inquiring now is because someone brought it up. So can I claim my parents as dependents on my taxes?

This is the first year that my husband and I are paying Real Estate Tax. It was $1400. We thought that seemed like A LOT. A friend said that it should be covered by ESCROW. I have no idea wha ESCROW is. I put extra into our mortgage every month, but I put it towards the principal. Should I have also been putting extra into an ESCROW.

I recently started a new job in Iowa. I am a single person only claiming myself. I am supposed to be paid every week but my first 2 weeks were on a combined check. Gross income 1320 and net income was 919. This seems like too high of tax being taken out. what do you think?

Also, how much is the government gonna take out of each paycheck? Let's say I work 20 hours a week, at $8/hr, which = $320 per bi-weekly paycheck. How much of it will they take out?
