I have recently divorced, my ex husband is not the biological father of my 8 year old daughter and he never adopted her. He is wanting to claim my daughter as a dependent when he files his tax return this year, however he up and left us for his 16 year old girlfriend at the beginning of the year. I also work and have intentions of listing my daughter as my dependent. Can he legally do this when I have already told him that I am claiming my daughter? Also does anyone know what tax credits are available for low income single parents. I am a college student and only make around $19000.00 a year. Any advice is helpful!

Hi, Our box of tax records was destroyed and we need copies of our previously filed tax returns for DC and MD. Their respective web sites are not useful and we can't get a helpful person on the phone. We filed ourselves, so we don't have a preparer who has a copy. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

i got 2 homes foreclosed late this year and i think around january is when people gets irs w2's etc. right...?

1009c with debt cancellations, i can't afford paying irs... it's too much for me.
will i still get that even after filing bankruptcy?
i think bankruptcy is supposed to prevent from getting 1099. will i need to hire a tax professional to file my tax...? thanks

Just imagine: no more blockbuster visits, premium parks, kids getting together instead of online gaming, basically all the things that a community center is SUPPOSED to do, only funded by the community and subsidized by the federal gov't. What do you think?

I get paid mostly in cash, partial in check, and I don't think they'll be claiming. If they don't claim do I have to? I make $375/week and usually get $125 in a check.

As a nanny working privately why would I have to claim anyway? (okay that sounds niave, but I just wonder why I would have to claim if this is a private job and not through an agency....)

I asked a question on here a few weeks ago, to much success - so now I only have 1 last thing that is confusing me.

I work a full-time job, and now I have started doing a few website design jobs here and there for extra money.

Someone in my last questioned mentioned if i 'start making a bunch of money at this' then I will have to start making quarterly estimated tax payments.

How much exactly is a 'bunch of money'?

Is it when I am getting regular work from the web design? Is it when a certain percentage of my income is from said web design? Or is is a specific dollar amount?

I'm just trying to be legal here and the government is making it very hard for my to understand how to do so. Ha!

Thank you in advance!

Stay with me--I have never had a job and this is my first time with this.

Questions:

1: For the total number of allowences I am claiming...
a) My husband is working as well. Do we BOTH claim our 2 children or does he claim one and claim the other?
b) It states if I have at least $1500 of child care expenses. We don't in 07 but will have them in 08.

2) I don't understand this:

Last year I had a right to a refund for all federal income tax withheld because I had no tax liability and this year I expect a refund for all federal income tax withheld because I expect to have no tax liability.

We were given a refund last year, but I don't quite know how that relates?

And about the cafeteria plan:
We have 2 kids that are going to be in daycare with about $185/week. Should I take out the max of $5K even though I'll only be making $30K? How exactly does that work?

The HR gal was gone by the time I got back from lunch.

My husband and I got married this year September 2007
I have a child from a previous relationship. Can we file jointly when the child is not my husband's dependant? Is my refund going to be affected greatly? Does one of us still file as head of household?
