i recently adjusted my benefits due to a life event and also added a $1000 dependend care spending account. i thought it was for next year becasue i will be enrolling my daughter to a pre-school by january. what i didn't realize is that my changes took effect immediately. now they have started to deduct money from my salary for the depedent care spending. how can i recover this? i don't have any receipts from a pre-school yet. its holiday season and i will be $1000 less. worse is, i don't want the gov't to forfeit that.

Also, see if you can prepay her preschool out of this years offsets. And check and see if your employer extends the deadline past the end of the year. They are allowed to extend by 2 1/2 months though not all do.

It's use it or lose it on FSA's. You might be able to talk to your payroll people and suspend the contributions for the rest of this year.

Will she be in preschool so you can work? Who is taking care of her now? Those expenses could be submitted for the account.
