We have always done our own taxes, but we keep being told that we should have a certified accountant look at them.

The person who did my taxes in January still has not mailed me the state form so that I could sign and submit it. Can I go and have someone else perform my state taxes. My federal was done correctly.

I just recently got audited and turns out I owe taxes along with penalties totaling $13,900. Can I use a Offer to Compromise in my case? I know IRS lets you make payments but can I bargain down the interest rate or do something about my penalties?

Hi, I'd like advice on where the best resource is for medium-complexity tax handling. My industry boomed last year, so I spent part of the year as a full-time employee and the rest as an independent consultant. I opened an SEP-IRA and put money in it, and at the same time my wife's had a fair amount of stock transactions. We also have a 1.5-year-old son for whom we've put money into a 529 college plan. We've also donated items to charity.

What do you think the lowest price I should expect to spend for sufficient tax help would be? I've tried H&R Block and TurboTax softwares, but our situations typically push a little bit past what their solutions offer.

I'd love to find a way to not have to pay $$$$ for tax help this year while wrapping things up as effectively and easily as possible...

Thanks!

I was thinking of using Taxcut this year to do my taxes. I've read a bunch of reviews, but one that I saw mentioned something about an additional $24.95 (and they said "required" with efiling) to have direct deposit. Does anyone know about this? Is this an additional $24.95 on top of the $15.95 efile charge? and is that PER RETURN? (so about $40 each to efile state and fed with direct deposit?)

I have efiled for several years and am aware of the fee to do that, but I don't recall ever having to pay an EXTRA FEE for direct deposit of my refund. What's up with that? Is this a fee charged by Taxcut or do the Feds and/or states charge this fee now?

I'm an immigrant and going to have a job. I would like to know about tax and I have no idea what to do when I need to file my tax.
I'm a tax beginner and maybe somebody can tell me how?

I also will have a car. What kind of insurance you usually buy for your car and yourself as a driver?

Every year, we get the shaft and have to pay...and it's always a lot (federal taxes). What are we doing wrong? We don't make a lot, it's just me and my husband. We used turbo tax so we are just plugging in numbers. Our mortgage interest didn't even help us. Should we be filing married/filing separatly? It sucks! The last time we got money back was when we had an apt! (years ago!) Any clue as to what's up? And can they take more out of paychecks so it is not such a "shock" come April?? Any tax professionals out there? Thanks!!

If you can, answer both or you can answer the one you know.
1) What does pre-tax basis and after tax basis mean?
2) 401k is tax deferred till retirement, but u get taxed after that, so what good is it? Why not just tax it now, i mean i dont see any benefits other than some employers matching the 401k contribution

Thanks you for your time :)

I am doing taxes for a friend of mine and i am stumped. she lives (rents) and works in MN but owns a home in WI and claims 'homestead' (her words) in WI. she should only have to file taxes in WI due to reciprocity right? What about rent credit for living in MN and renting?
