We have always done our own taxes, but we keep being told that we should have a certified accountant look at them.

I know at H & R Block encourages all its employees to become Enrolled Agents (EA), by paying for the tests and licensing fees for its employees and with increased compensation for anyone that is an Enrolled Agent. This also includes the seasonal employees.
For those who do not know an Enrolled Agent is someone who is licensed by the IRS to prepare tax returns and to act as a personal representive for tax payers. (similar duties to a tax attorney or CPA). You can have anyone of those three catagories represent you without having to be there yourself. Enrolled Agents can also take the bar exam and pratice before United States Tax Courts.
All tax preparers at H&R Block regarldless if they are Enrolled Agents or not are required to take 30 hours of classes plus tax update classes to be rehired.

Many of the employees preparing taxes at the storefront tax prep companies are temporary employees hired for the tax season, and have no accounting training or background beyond a fe week course in tax prep given by the company that hires them.
You can find a CPA in the phone book, or ask people you know.

Undoubtedly there are CPAs on staff with both outifts, at least at the corporate level. However there are very few at the storefront locations since a CPA can make much more money in private practice than at a tax prep mill.

There are some but not many at either of those tax preparation firms. I would ask if they have one or look for a smaller CPA firm that does tax preparation.

Not all preparers at commercial preparation firms are CPAs. However, some offices have CPAs or EAs (enrolled agents).
You can request a preparer with one of these credentials.
