Hi, I'd like advice on where the best resource is for medium-complexity tax handling. My industry boomed last year, so I spent part of the year as a full-time employee and the rest as an independent consultant. I opened an SEP-IRA and put money in it, and at the same time my wife's had a fair amount of stock transactions. We also have a 1.5-year-old son for whom we've put money into a 529 college plan. We've also donated items to charity.

What do you think the lowest price I should expect to spend for sufficient tax help would be? I've tried H&R Block and TurboTax softwares, but our situations typically push a little bit past what their solutions offer.

I'd love to find a way to not have to pay $$$$ for tax help this year while wrapping things up as effectively and easily as possible...

Thanks!

I don't see why TurboTax couldn't handle your tax filings. It covers everything you mentioned. Otherwise a professional cpa would probably charge approx. b/w $300-$400 for your tax return.

I don't know what you consider $$$, but at a commercial preparer, this looks like perhaps $300 or so. Ask for an experienced preparer and make an appointment. Ask if they accept competitor's coupons, many places do.

Go online and get a coupon to save some $ when you bring the coupon to the appointment.

It will be done in one sitting and it will be off your back.

You might be ahead to find a CPA to prepare your return this year. He or she can very possibly come up with some deductions you can take toward your independent consultant income that might balance out much of their fee. And a CPA should have the knowledge to prepare the return accurately.
