I worked all of 2005 and 5 months of 2006 at a store, and I claimed single and zero, and taxes were withheld from every check. This is shown on my 2005 W-2, but on my 2006 W-2, it shows that no Federal Income tax was withheld. I had an issue with this employer refusing to provide earnings statements, even though I asked for one repeatedly, so I have no proof of wages, hours, withholdings, nothing. However, enough was held back from what my gross pay would have been each week that I know he was holding the taxes out.

This is a job where I had two bosses, neither ever consulted with the other about anything and then got mad when employees did what one said instead of the other, and I wound up getting fired by the SheBoss for doing what the HeBoss told me to do, so there is NO love between us. Without having any proof of earnings or withholdings, can I hang them out to dry with the IRS on this one, or am I pretty much screwed?

My husband has not changed anything in the last year. He is still filing the same (married but with higher single rate) and claiming one exemption. So why did last year he got like $2000 back and yet when we did this years return (used a tax program) he is getting $10 back? We're confused!

Greetings,

My wife and I live in a 3 bedroom apartment in New York City. We only use two of the bedrooms and have the third as a guest room for friends and family. However, we do rent/sublet the room to people sometimes on a weekly basis. Sometimes people will stay with us for 1 week, or sometimes several months. We just charge people a weekly or monthly rate to stay with us.

I'm curious if there are any tax implications to this I should be concerned about. I was thinking that this is really no different than living with roomates (even though people usually only stay a month or two). Also, since this is our primary residence it isn't really like we're doing it as a business.

Any additional information as to whether this is taxable income or reportable to the IRS would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Matt

We built a home in 06 and did some home improvements after we moved in. I wonder if we can also deduct some of the fees like construction fees, origination fees, appraisal.. etc.We may just have to ask a prof to do our taxes. I did our 1040 with no problems(have not filed it yet) but I didn't see any part there where I can deduct home improvements like I heard some people say. We live in OH if it's of any significance to those who have an answer. Thanks.

We refinanced our mortgage in 2006 and 2400.00 for points was added in. The mortgage that was payed off had 2000.00 in points that I hadn't deducted in prior years. The 1098 form I received shows that 2400.00 was paid in points. (Even though we didn't actually pay them yet) Which of these amounts can I actually use? Or do I have to spread them out over the life of the loan? Also can I deduct the prepaid Interest and property taxes that shows on my refinance settlement statement, or would these already be added in on the 1098? I have tried researching these questions, but it seems like different sites give conflicting info. Thanks for your help!
