My husband has not changed anything in the last year. He is still filing the same (married but with higher single rate) and claiming one exemption. So why did last year he got like $2000 back and yet when we did this years return (used a tax program) he is getting $10 back? We're confused!

Two possibilities:
- something HAS changed, like his withholdings or deductions;
- he screwed up something last year, and got a too-big refund

Why are you not filing jointly? In all but a few cases filing separately increases your tax burden.

Nothing has changed? Really?? 1. Higher income 2. Got married 3. Changed filing status 4. Tax rates, exemptions, deductions & credits have changed since 2008 5. You files as MFS instead of MFJ. MFJ will usually result in lower total taxes than MFS. All of that said, don't waste your time comparing refunds between years. It's an utterly meaningless comparison. If you lay last year's return next to this year's and compare line-for-line the differences will be obvious. The MWP credit is a wash. It was advanced through lower withholding and then he claimed it when he filed. The two cancel each other out. It's also obvious that you don't understand what a tax refund is in the first place. It's not some sort of bonus that you get for working, but just change for overpayment of your taxes. If you bought something at Wally World for $50 and gave the cashier a $100 and she told you that you'd have to wait until next April for your change, you'd go postal and you know it. Why is it that you're so happy to let the IRS do the same thing to you?? Just does NOT make ANY sense at all.

If your income, family status, any deductions and withholding are about the same as last year, then your refund should be pretty close to last year's also. Lay printed copies of both returns side by side, and see what number changed by a lot. It could just be a mistake. If there's a mistake, it could be last year or this year.

If you still don't see what's wrong, post again with more detail.

There has to be a mistake--things do not change like that!
Go over every single line until you find it! I'm guessing it didn't recognize the married status or something.

If you don't find anything, get the forms and fill them in yourself, and compare the two.
