If I claimed EIC honestly thinking that I qualified for it...will I still be penalized and if so, can they arrest me? Can I be charged with a criminal offense?

I have read some horror stories about the IRS arresting people and I am supposed to hear something from them this week. Can they just show up at my door??

I got married in november of 2006. I completed my fed return no problem. The problem is with the Arizona Tax return which is where we live. My wife made no money in Arizona, but i included her wages in the federal form. The state form asks for the "Federal adjusted gross income". But i dont know how to subtract the money my wife made in colorado. Any ideas?

If the goverment saves money when consumers efile, and they want to encourage more people to efile to save paper (good for the environment) and other resources, then why do they charge a fee? Would it not make more sense to charge a fee to file a paper return and allow efile to be free?

There used to be rebates for efiling, but that was discontinued.

I like their customer service, prices & timeliness. Am I wrong to want to know if they pay taxes so I can continue to support their business? Or am I being a flipping nazi for even thinking these things?
I suppose I can start asking for a receipt.
I could also find out if it's cash only for their haircuts only & not for other services.

My friend received 1099s in 2006 for freelance writing, but never officially registered or incorporated herself. Is she automatically considered a sole proprietor? Or does she need to fill out other forms to register the business before being able to claim the 1099s on schedule C?

I already have a house (that I live in) that I've been deducting mortage interest for the past five years. I've been told that I can deduct the condo mortgage interest on my taxes for a "second home". I don't know if milage is a factor in qualifing for a second home -- the condo is only 3 miles from my house. My family/friends do not pay me rent when they stay in the condo. Having the condo has worked out very nice over the past six months because we get away from each other for 8-12hr/day when they are in town, but would even be better if I can fully deduct the mortgage interest from my taxes. Any suggestions on how to handle this situation on my taxes?

I had a business with my brother - it operated for 11 mo's in 2004 and then went under. I personally guaranteed one of the debts, and also paid a few small ones that I did not personally guarantee...in 2006, paid $2,000 toward the one I personally guaranteed...

Does this count for anything at all when calculating my 2006 personal return? Or do I have to ammend my 2004 return (again, if this payment has any bearing on that)...

Anybody know?

Thanks!

Hello, it's my first time filing taxes without the help of my parents, so I'm looking at online tax programs and don't know which to choose. H and R has a program for federal and if you have to file state, but doesn't tell me why I may or may not file state. How do I know? Also, I bought a car in and have investments in my name and a bank account all linked to another state than where I live and work, will I have to file state taxes in both states? Should I just go to a professional? How much does that typically cost? Thanks for any help!

In June of '06 my father stated to me "You are going to be employed for a $60,000.00 salary." I never recieved a paycheck. He wire transfered my mother's Child Support for my brother into my account. Only 400 a week and 1100 once a month, not even close to $60,000 a year. I questioned him on this numerous times and didn't stop until I screamed at him to stop sending my mother's money into my account. He says i am liable for taxes now, even though i was never employed (from my perspective). What do I do about this? Do I still need to pay taxes on money that wasn't mine to begin with.
