I believe that you are speaking of a ITIN which typically is issued to someone without a Social Security Number. The answer to your question is NO! You can not use the ITIN for employment purposes. At the risk of offending the conscious of some folks, I can tell you that the IRS will permit you to file a tax return using your ITIN and W-2s which were prepared using a fake SS#. The name on the W-2 must match the name on your ITIN. It happens thousands of times a day.

A social security number for the most part is the only legal means to get employment.

An employer ID number, an individual tax ID number, or a social security number that has "not valid for employment" on the card do not qualify.

The only exception I know of to this rule is someone in this country on a student visa can legally work at the school they attend.

You will have a job in the local lock up mopping the jailhouse floor. If you use a business tax ID instead of a SS or TIN for foreign workers working in the US legally it will be cross referenced and you will be visited by a Polyester suit with a warrant. If you can legally work in the US you will have a work permit with a tax id or social security card. Your status is cross referenced and checked in real time when your pay is recorded to the tax authorities.

Usually, a tax I.D. number is used when hiring a contractor. If those companies are looking for contracted employees, then there will be no problem. If they are hiring regular employees, then they will require your SSN.
A contracted employee is one that provides his/her own insurance, benefits, provides for proper income tax payments to the government, covers the costs of needed education for advancement or promotion, makes worker's comp payments, provides for required uniforms and accessories, etc.
Regular empoyees have insurance and benefits provided by the employer.

Why don't you ask them? wouldn't it be best to ask one of those places yourself instead of someone on Yahoo?
