I just forgot to mail the envelope. So I am aware that I owed about $150. What do I do for this year? Just ignore it and continue with my taxes as if I paid them last year? Is it a big deal? I'll pay the 150 if they ask me for it...but do they actually know about it?

I have a shortterm capital loss carryover of about $25K from earlier years of investing in stocks.
I've been deducting the standard $3K yearly from ordinary income as I don't play the market much any more.
If I were to play the market again and show a shortterm capital gain of $25K this year, wouldn't I be able to offset the ENTIRE amount and hold onto the entire gain??
I'm pretty sure I can, but my friend says I can't, and even his CPA supports him. Who is correct??? Shouldn't he get a new CPA?? :)

I have been living outside of the US for the past six years. I never filed a return as I assumed that as my salary was exempt from US taxes, I would not need to file any return. I did not owe the government money right? I know the mistakes of youth. Do I need to file a return or the previous six years. I am still living abroad and will continue to do so for a while but do not wish to get into trouble with the IRS.

I was just doing my taxes and found out that because I was a tutor for "No Child Left Behind" for a short period of time, it cut my refund in half... because they made me file a 1099 for it...

How dare they? And the private tutoring company never even paid me for the gas that I spent to drive all over the county tutoring the kids....

I babysit my neighbor's children (2&4) for four dollars an hour. (3hours a day) The mom told me she's going to claim the childcare on her taxes as a business expense/tax writeoff. How much do I need to set aside so that I can pay MY taxes on this income? *grin*
What started out as a "Once in a while" thing has sure mushroomed.
Also, do you know of a website that explains this in detail? Thanks in advance.

That seems higher than the tax brackets I remember in my college accounting class. If I'm heading for a refund @ the end of the year, how can I get them to take less out so I don't have for the end of a year to get it back?

I live in North Carolina, here is what I see on my paycheck:

Fed Withholding 13%
Fed MED/EE 1.45%
Fed OASDI/EE 6.2%
NC Withholding 6.25%

What is all that stuff?

I claimed my 17 year old son on my taxes (per my divorce decree) and found out his dad did his own taxes so they wouldn't let me claim him as he claimed himself. Now I owe the IRS a ton of money instead of getting a return. My son made $6,000 this year. Is there a way to reverse this? Do I have any other options? I thought the law was that I could claim him before 18 regardless what he made. Thanks!
