There is a law in the US Constitution that does state that the government can impose an income tax on the people. Up until WWII there was no such thing. The Income Tax was enacted in order to pay for the war. After the war, it was to be stopped, but no one did. Therefore we, to this day, are still paying an income tax.

Try the 16th amendment to the Constitution for starters. Be careful of the anti-tax loonies out there. You can be sure everyone will pay their taxes. I choose to pay mine when due. The anti-tax loonies still have to pay after they get out of prison. My current goal is to make enough income to owe $1,000,000.00 in federal income tax for the year.

Read the 16th amendment to the constitution.

There is a movement called tax protestors that keep claiming this. When it gets to court, they lose every time. Some then pay up, with penalties - some go to prison.

State income tax is controlled by the state you live in. The 10th Amendment gives states the power to decide such things.

US Code Title 26. (Subtitle A defines income tax.)
It's definitely on the books.

There's some debate about whether or not income tax is Constitutional, but not by any serious legal scholars.
