I just forgot to mail the envelope. So I am aware that I owed about $150. What do I do for this year? Just ignore it and continue with my taxes as if I paid them last year? Is it a big deal? I'll pay the 150 if they ask me for it...but do they actually know about it?

Yes they know about it, and at some time, probably soon, will contact you about it. If you still have the envelope, just go ahead and mail it - they'll let you know if you owe additional money for interest and penalties, which you probably do by now.

If you don't still have the envelope, fill out the 2005 return again and mail it. You can download forms at irs.gov under "prior years" - be sure to use the correct year's forms and instructions.

Then go ahead and file this year's return.

Did you have a job and get a W-2? Were you self-employed and did you get 1099's? if either of those is true, the IRS will already know about you and will write to you sometime in the next few months. File your 2005 return, pay the tax and await the bill for penalties and interest. At that point you can ask them to abate the penalty. You may be pleasantly surprised at the result.

It is not an option to do nothing. They will find you, they will ask for the money and they will be less inclined to abate penalties if they have to write to you first.

Yes they know! Also, since you didn't file any paperwork, your actual tax bill according to the IRS will be much larger! They don't automaticall take any deductions at all into account.

The easy thing? File the taxes, pay the $150 and wait fo them to send you a bill for the penalties and such. You will be better off this way.

FILE FOR LAST YEAR,(2005), NOW!
Enclose the amount you owe, plus interest and penalties. You can get those amounts by calling your nearest IRS office.
If you owe any additional amount, you will receive notice.

On the outside of the envelope, write, "2005 Return".

YES, they know. All income is reported. Penalties and interest is calculated by the day.

DO NOT IGNORE THIS!

Do it now. You have to file your taxes. They may not know right now but I guarantee you someday they will find out. You'll also owe a lot more the longer you wait. You're going to have to calculate up the late fee and interest as well.
