I am curious as to what the benefits are to hiring someone to do your taxes for you, when I don't have very many deductions to make as I a) don't own a home b) don't have an independent business c) have only $8000 in investments, which haven't made me more than $100 this year :( --- What would be the benefit, if any, to hire someone for $100 to do my taxes, rather than use turbotax or some other tax program?

My mother claims she did not claim me last year on her taxes and she will not this year. She has always filed mine with hers because she claims they will do it for free. She has been slightly mentally unstable for the past year, and I don't exactly trust her. Where do I need to go to see if I claimed myself last year, or if someone else (my mother) has claimed me??

I'm partner in an LLC and got my K-1 for around 20K. When doing my personal tax return my software is charging the SE tax, pretty close to 3K. Other partner prepared her taxes with a CPA and her return doesn't show any SE tax and made the same money. Who is right, the CPA or the software package? I tried to check a little more in the IRS web page but found nothing.

I forgot to report a small amount of income(several hundred dollars) on my taxes. Should I just let it go? Or should I play it safe and tell them? Are there any penalties? Will the IRS hunt me down and imprison me if they catch this? What are the chances of them finding out? Need as much info. as possible. Thanks in advance.

I sent in mine and my boyfriend's income taxes via netfile a few weeks ago. We have both only received part of our return (direct deposit) with the strange part being that they withheld exactly $486 from each of us. Should I be expecting a cheque in the mail for the remaining amount? I also moved since the last time I filed taxes, I don't know if this has anything to do with it. If you need any more details let me know, but I think I included everything. Thanks in advance!!!

DETAILS: I've lived in California all my life (approx. 21 yrs.) and have never paid taxes before. On 06/07/2006 I moved to Montana and took up a job(s) and worked between 08/08/2006 and 12/01/2006 (approx.). In that time I made $3365 on a W-2 and had $74 deducted for stare income tax. I also made $510 in misc. income. I then proceed to move back to California on 12/14/2006.

QUESTION(S): Now, the question I have regarding this, which I haven't been able to find the answer to is this: Did I make enough to have to report it? Am I required to file state taxes in Montana? Because if I don't have to then I don't see the need as it isn't worth it going through the hassle to do so. If I do need to, what forms do I need to fill out and send in? This is driving me bonkers. I can't seem to find out what I need to do.

My neighborhood is trying to establish a new pedestrian/bike path with the city which may involve the need for a few properties to give small strips of land to the city to make it possible. Is the value of the land given to the city claimable as a "donation" and if so, at what value, fair market value as of date of transfer or some other calculation? (Note that this situation is NOT one where the city would claim or take the land by emminent domain. And in case it matters though I would think it shouldn't, the jurisdiction happens to be Palo Alto, CA.) Thanks!

I've filed both my Federal and Maryland state tax. Just found out that I missed 2006 margin interest on my tax return. It's about $1500. I did have a net capital gain over $1,500. How can I add the margin interest to my 2006 return? Or can I simply add that amount to my next year's return? Thanks!

I bought 1000 shares MBNA stock at $25 dollars back in july 05.

MBNA was acquired by Bank of America and the transaction completed in 1/3/2006. I received $4,125 in cash and 500 shares of BOA at $47.08.

How do I record this transaction for the IRS? On my 1099 form, only the $4125 was reported to the IRS. Do I have a cost basis of $25000, and hence a loss of $4125-$25000 = $20875?

Thanks for your help!

Does anyone know if the Commonwealth of Virginia allows taxpayers to pay their dues through installments? I think this year I owe more than I can pay at the moment. I tried looking at the Virginia Dept. of Taxation Web site but to no avail. Am I looking at the wrong place or is there simply no method of paying in installments for state taxes?
