I made about 23000. before taxes and my husband made about 20,000 before taxes. We paid in about 4500.00 to the federal government over the year through our paychecks. Turbo tax says that we will only get 1000 back. Is that how much it should be? I thought we should get close to all of it back.

Three Men register for a Motel/Hotel room. The desk clerk charges them
$ 30.00 for the room. They all chip in $ 10.00 a piece. The three walk into the room and prepare to sleep.

A half hour later, the desk clerk realized he made a mistake and should have charged them $ 9.00 a piece. So the desk clerk gives the bellhop 5 dollar bills.
He directs the bellhop to give the three that rented the room $ 1.00 dollar a piece and keep the remaining $ 2.00 for yourself.

Tax Question: After returning the three dollars to the three men, their actual cost for the room became $ 27.00. $ 2.00 went to the bellhop which totals
$ 29.00. What happened to the other dollar?

I work at a restaurant in NYC and we've always gotten paid without taxes being taken out of our checks. We instead claim the money and pay taxes every year to the government. I just found out the job is going to start taking taxes out of people's checks without notifying them first and without having us fill out any paperwork such as a W-2 or I-9 form. Is this legal?

2 years ago my tax credits were stooped due to information misplaced by the IR.They decided to pay me manually and said as soon as they'd resolved the problem they'd let me know.I've now received a bill for £12k saying i've been overpaid as i wasn't entitled, even though i was.I'm at my wits end with worry and of course i'm still not receiving the credits as i should.Any ideas where i should turn for help as the IR just don't want to know.

This has to be descrimination. The federal gov. does not tax my ss but tn. counts income from ALL sources. My gross income amount with federal gov. would exclude me from state income tax but I have to count social security. I yhink this would be a great class action lawsuit, anyone agree?

I really need some advice. I worked 3 jobs for the 2006 tax season and recieved all 3 W2's from my employers. I used TaxActOnline.com to do my taxes, but before that, I totaled all my jobs boxes from 1 to 17 in the for the W2 Wage Summary. I thought it would be easier to combine all jobs as ONE income under my current employers name, so when filing, it would be easier online. When I used TaxAct to complete my Efile for my W2's, I just realized AFTER that there was an option to enter separate W2's and it would total all of them together automatically. My forms have been submitted to the IRS and accepted, and I believe my TaxRefund should be deposited in my account in the next 2 weeks. Basically I filed one tax return for all three jobs, but didn't state on my tax return that I had 3 jobs. If the IRS does check the W2's (they have a copy right?) and combine and calculate them all, I know it would balance out the same way I did when I Efiled. Should I be worried? What do i need to do?

Check out Fairtax.org. The idea would eliminate witholding completely. Replacing it with a national sales tax. Before you condemn it, read about it. Interesting idea.

I have a laptop computer that I am no longer using. Can I donate it to the school that my wife works at and take a tax deduction? She spoke to someone at the school that said they will give me a letter on school letterhead that says I made the donation and what the value of it is (based on what I tell them). Is that all I need to write it off next year?
