I heard I can only go back 3 years. The taxes taken out are very small and I know I won't owe the irs, so is it worth it to even file the older W2's?

I did a small one-time consulting gig last year and received a 1099-MISC Box 7 Non-Empl Comp for $2K. When I did my taxes via TaxCut, it treated this as Misc Income (line 21 Form 1040) as this was a one-time event. TurboTax does not ask this question and created a Sch C with SS and Self_Employ taxes applied.

In perusing the IRS website, it seems to refer to the non-recurring nature being treated as Other Income, but it's not very clear.

I may contact the IRS on this one, but thought I'd throw it out to the Yahoo Answers community for some feedback.

thanks!

I have a website in which I sell products all accross the country.
My understanding is that out-of-state sales are exempt from sales tax. Is this correct?

If someone filed joint with their partner which owed money, but they were supposed to get money back but didn't because they received a letter saying they needed copies of information, in which the partner could not provide because it had been damaged, and the money owed back after what the partner owed was never returned, what should one do? Would there be problems or penalties for money not returned to the taxpayer? And if the taxpayer files single the next year?

If you pay in for a private pension at work, you of course pay tax on all.

But do you have to pay tax on it AGAIN when you finally retire and get to receive it???????

I know that business expenses such as advertising can be written off of taxes. What I need to know is what percentage of the expense can be written off? If it is more complex than a approximate percentage, an explanation would be great.

Thanks in advance.

For my sister to qualify as a "qualifiying relative", I meet 3 tests for sure:

1. She is not a qualifiying child
2. She makes less than $3,300 a year
3. I paid for all her expenses

However, there is a gray area in the relationship test.
1. She does not live with me, since she lives on campus at the university, and during the summer break she goes to Mexico to my parent's house for vacation.
2. My parents do not have any U.S. income , they are not U.S. citizens, and they are not "tax payers".
3. Her permanent address is still my parent's address in Mexico.

I understand that the rule says that a person is considered to live with me as a member of my household, if she is away for education or vacation purposes.

Does she still meet this test since she never lives with me during the year, except for a couple of days during small breaks, such as thanksgiving and spring break, etc?

My fiance and I bought a house together in August. We were planning to each declare half of the mortgage interest and property tax but calculated that we would get a bigger tax refund if I declare all of it this year.

This is because while I already owned a home before buying this one, she didn't, and so in her case, four months worth of deductions for the interest and tax are barely more than the standard deduction.

My question is - would it be illegal for me to declare all the interest this year?
