I sold some stocks this past year and received a "Form 1099-B". I understand that I am supposed to fill out a Schedule D using this information, but I don't understand what I list in columns (d) and (e) in order to determine column (f)--the Gain or Loss. In column (d) do I list the total proceeds I received from the stock sale (as is listed in 'box 2" on my 1099-B)? And I have no idea what to put in column (e)--the "Cost or other Basis". My particular confusion revolves around the fact that I purchased this stock about 17 years ago and it has obviously changed a lot (split, etc.) over that period. So while this past year I only sold a portion of the shares I own, I don't know how that compares to when I purchased it. In other words, in column (e) do I report what I paid for everything that I bougt in 1990 or just a portion of it?
Thanks for any information you can give me.

I became an independent contractor this past January when I began tutoring high school students. This is in addition to my full-time job. I would like to pay my taxes quarterly so I don't end up with a huge amount to pay next year. Can anyone point me in the right direction to estimate the taxes I owe?

I am having a problem that has to do with taxes...

I pay rent to my landlady and I am currently looking for a job...I am also on benefits, so I receive a job seeker's allowance and a big part of my monthly rent. The problem is, since I am not a student any more, my landlady has to pay an additional 25% of taxes, so she asked me to pay for it since it is a lot of money for her, apart from the rest she has to pay. If I do not pay, she will prefer a full time student who would be exempt. So, the final result? On the one hand I receive the benefits, on the other hand, the money goes back to them!! I will be having the same problem even if I move to any other house...any suggestions?

I have already been to the benefits department, and they just do not understand what I am saying to them...they gave me the answer: Your landlady had received a 25%discount which was not supposed to...I already know that. The thing is...I am the one who pays for it instead of her! Oh! And it is backdated!

My father quit claimed his house to his 5 children in Fall 2005. He was in a nursing home and the house was never lived in again. We sold the house in Dec 2006 and split proceeds between all 5 children. What tax liabilities are each child responsible for? Originally the house was in his will and to be inherited upon his death. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There's a vast underground economy in the US that never gets taxed. All of the honest citizens who pay everything they owe get completely screwed by these scammers. We could reduce taxes for everyone (and I suspect substantially) if the scammers couldn't get away with it. Surely, there's an alternative to the present system!
