The ATO is not into tossing people in jail unless they really don't try to do the right thing. If you owe the ATO money and cant pay it up front call them and ask about paying it off. The standard terms are usually 3 months but it will incur interest (generally at higher than bank interest rates) while you are paying it back. The phone number is 13 11 42 and you should have your tax file number on hand when you call them.

PS whenever you have a tax problem... always call the the ATO immediately and let them know what is going on- if you don't and they have to chase you over some matter they get really snaky and that's when the penalties start to kick in.

no jail,,
but you could get a job tomorrow and have the $350. by the 15th
IRS knows this so they will charge you interest while you sit there doing nothing.

you can work out payment plans with the irs. $30 a month kind of thing
