My mother claims she did not claim me last year on her taxes and she will not this year. She has always filed mine with hers because she claims they will do it for free. She has been slightly mentally unstable for the past year, and I don't exactly trust her. Where do I need to go to see if I claimed myself last year, or if someone else (my mother) has claimed me??

If your mother did not give you a copy of your tax return, go to the place where the return was done and get a copy (or ask to see it, no charge).

If you were filed as claiming yourself, or not, you have the answer to your question.

PS: The place that filed it should not have done so without your signature.

I can see where some companies will do the tax form for dependents without charge when they prepare the parent's return. But you should have at least been consulted and they'd need your signature to make it legal. You should always get a copy of your own tax return, no matter what.

I'd (very nicely, like you didn't know any of the above information) ask the person who did the tax returns last year for a copy of your return. They should fork one over for you, especially if you tell them that they gave it to your Mom and she lost it.

Go to your local tax place such as H & R Block and file. If you get a double claim then you know someone other than you as claimed you. Or, you could try asking her?

You don't get a copy of your return? It's not supposed to be filed without your signature. And who is this "they" that will do it for free if it's done with hers? A paid preparer will expect payment for each return he or she prepares.

File your own.
