I sent in mine and my boyfriend's income taxes via netfile a few weeks ago. We have both only received part of our return (direct deposit) with the strange part being that they withheld exactly $486 from each of us. Should I be expecting a cheque in the mail for the remaining amount? I also moved since the last time I filed taxes, I don't know if this has anything to do with it. If you need any more details let me know, but I think I included everything. Thanks in advance!!!

We filed as a couple, but still get our returns separately. I checked over the numbers very carefully and they are all the same as what my forms say. I was really hoping this would just have something to do with moving, and them just wanting to use a cheque as a way to confirm the address. Also, the gst credit isn't that much and neither of us has ever received any other credits under false circumstances. I guess I will have to wait for my notice of assesment though. Thanks

I strongly suspect that the fact that both returns came up short by the exact same amount means that there was an error in your reporting using the netfile program, or there is a reassessment of previous entitlement to the GST tax credit.

It would indicate on the Notice of Assessment that you received from CRA what the discrepancies are from what you reported and what they have processed.

Did you file as a couple or separately?

Any additional information would be helpful, thank you.

Sorry to disappoint you, but you won't be receiving the difference in the mail at this point.

Thanks for the additional information Rosie...when you get your Notice of Assessment, I am certain the answer to this mysterious shortfall of refunds will become much clearer.

The only other thing that comes to mind as to this shortfall could be this...did you have a repayment to be made to the Home Buyer's Plan ?

And, yes, while you do file separate returns, these returns are matched by CRA for accuracy, you both may have made duplicate claims for the same thing.

If you wish, you can email me once you receive your Notice of Assessment if you require further assistance (I used to work for CRA, I am sure I can figure out this one for you).

There could be various reasons why the government withheld that money from you. It is odd that it is the same amount on both of your taxes.I would have a look at your notice of assessment to see what is different from what you filed. Also you can call 1-800-959-8281 to discuss your return with Canada Revenue Agency. They will not discuss your boyfriends but they will discuss your return with you.
