My wife's mother lived with us until January of 2006. She now is in a nursing home. We maintain a room for her here still, including an active phone line and pay her credit card bills. Are we able to declare her a dependant on our 2006 tax return?

My husband and I owe taxes this year. That must mean that we are not claiming enough on the w2. Or we are claiming too much. Both of us are claiming 1 each. We have two kids. I want to end up breaking even with IRS and State (California). What is the right number for us to claim so that we don't have to owe next year. We can go right into our employer and do this, right?

I am curious about how sales tax works. If I purchase an item from city A and return it in city B, which city gets the sales tax? Does this mean that the tax revenue goes to city A and city B loses the revenue from the return?

My husband is self employed and we entertain a lot. We both decided to purchase a boat this year to entertain his clients on it.
Will we be able to take any tax deductions on it this year, say for example gas if it's out all day? It's a 30' cabin cruiser.

I was paid 4000.00 from unemployment compensation in 2006 and have a w2 from 2005(that I did not use when I filed 2005 taxes last yr). The W2 states that I made $170.00, and paid $10.54 in SS tax along with $2.47 in Medicare tx. As for the U.C, I never opted to have taxes tooken out of my UC benifits check ,so I am assumming I will have to pay taxes. I am very confused, I do not know If I am eligible to receive earned income credit. I am not even sure if I am eligible to file taxes for 2006.
F.Y.I. I did not work in 2006, the W.2 I am referring to is from a job I worked 1 day at in 2005. When I filed my taxes last yr I did`nt get this w2 in time so I just filed w/o it. I am hoping that having this will some how save me from having to pay unemployment taxes and possibly get my Earned income credit..
Any and all answers are very much appreciated and welcomed!!
There are no stupid answers just as there are no stupid questions!! Thank you and have a wonderful and safe weekend...

We are an active duty Army family and were relocated by the military from Washington State to Texas. We had to sell our home before living in it for two years which I was told by my realtor was the magic amount of time you have to live in a home before you do not have to claim the profit made on the sale as a capitol gain. Does anyone know for sure if there is any kind of exemption is you are forces to move by your employer. My husband was not deployed during this time (if this matters) and we bought a new home in TX about two months before we sold the WA home . Thanks!

Is it true that the more you make the more you’ll receive back from the Earned Child Tax credit?
For instances, I’m a student with two children and only made 1,000 last year would I be receiving less if I claim them for the earned child tax credit , compared to if they’re father claimed them? (We all live together and we aren’t married.)
