My wife's mother lived with us until January of 2006. She now is in a nursing home. We maintain a room for her here still, including an active phone line and pay her credit card bills. Are we able to declare her a dependant on our 2006 tax return?

If you provided more than half of her support for the year, you can very possibly claim her. Her nursing home bills would be considered support, so if you aren't paying over half of those, it's pretty unlikely that you could claim her as a dependent.

I don't think so--partly because to qualify I think the dependent had to live w/ you for over 6 months per year.

Also for an adult dependent, the dependent can't have made over 3200 a year. If your mother in law is drawing social security than she would disqualify as a dependent due to income.

However this is just what I suspect. I honestly don't know for sure.

you can claim her if she is not filing any returns and you must be paying half of her expences. for any furthur details go for these sites.
