We are filing jointly. Do we both get sales tax deduction from both states?

You're filing jointly, so you get one or the other - the TOTAL state income tax that the two of you paid, or the sales tax for the state where you live. I'd guess that the state income tax would be higher.

Does he live in Washington or just work there and live in California? In most states, he would owe state income tax on his income from another state if it was made while he was living in the first state - I'd be surprised if CA lets that slip by, so if he lives in CA, check to be sure.

You claim the sales tax deduction in your state of legal residence if you opt to not deduct state income taxes.
