I was thinking about getting married to my girlfriend if it allowed us to pay less taxes. We're totally in love and sure about our relationship, and we're actually having our firstborn in a few months, so don't think that we'd be getting married for the sole purpose of taxes and start bashing me.

We weren't planning on getting married, we were going to just change her last name to mine. Not getting married is due to personal reasons (our relationship is above religion and government which is all marriage is about)

So if we both filed as being unmarried will we pay less taxes then if we file married either joint or seperate?

Also if we both file single, can we both claim our son?

(Yes I'm asking for next year, I know I have to file single this year, and no 'common law' marriage doesn't exist so don't mention that please)

Thanks everybody, happy answering!!

I had $0 earned income and $1500 interest and dividend income for tax year 2006. Is now the time to roll to a Roth? How is the tax rate determined? Prior year income? I have savings to pay the tax so I'm not worried about having to pay the tax with principal thus paying penalty tax also. Thanks a $$$$$$$$$$$.

I just received my form 1099 Misc. from my employer. On box 7, "nonemployee compensation" it shows a greater amount from what I really earned. My employer says that the company already filled their taxes and that there is nothing that he can do. What must I do or what should they do to correct my form 1099 Misc? I would appreciated if anyone can provide a link to where I can find this information.

I have been working for my employer from a year now and have been asking for my W2 which is obivously late. Today she told me that she is making me fill out a W9 which I belive gives me a 1099 MISC. This states that I am an independant contracter. Which I am not. I assumed that she was taking taxes out this whole time. What can I do about my status?? It is not correct. Also what does a 1099 have me do? What is my responsibility if I can not change my status? How much do I have to pay (%) ? Is it just federal and state taxes or also medicare and social security?? Please help!!
