Personal Finance - January 2007

I first of all was foreclosed on and didn't know what to do. People advised me to file bankruptcy and so I did. My attorney said my best bet was to file chapter 7 which discharges all debt, however he said it would be a miracle for me to stay in my home. I am at a loss and want to know if anyone out there has ever had such an experience. My ex husband also has cancer and has not been able to pay child support for a while because of not working and I think I am screwed, help?

A few years ago I had a life threatening illness. I accumulated a couple hundred thousand dollars in medical bills. I am not able to pay any more more than what I am currently paying. I got served papers today for one of those medical bills. What can I do. Can I fill a counter suit for all the harrassing this company did to me at home and at work, what options do I have.

These days a bankruptcy will not cover student loans and I'm wondering how aggressive they can get in garnishing all of my future wages or SSI payments until the loans are paid off.

Between my husband and i we have about 12 credit cards. I know, i know we shouldn't have gotten ourselves in this mess to begin with.
We are 22 years old, I have a steady well paying job and he is in the military. We do not have creditors calling yet, but we are struggling to pay the minimum payments. 1 of his credit cards did get recently charged off.
I tried shopping for Debt Consolidation Agency's and the one i looked into was going to charge us a $2,750 service fee! Is this normal?

Our total debt in Credit Cards alone is appox. $18,000 (not including car payments, household bills etc.)

HELP!!! If not a Debt Consolidation Agency, then what? And if i go with a Consolidation Agency will it affect my credit?

Hi, this is probably a dummy question. I am thinking to pay more each month for my mortgage. So my question is that will the extra prepayment go to the principal or the interest? If I pay more, will I get more tax deduction or less?

Thanks.

I am trying to learn as much as I can about personal finance, but I'm very much a beginner. My concern right now is picking a bank that better suits my needs.

Does anyone know of a good resource (website, book or otherwise) that can explain as clearly and completely as possible how to pick financial institutions, what to look for, etc...?

I'm especially interested in learning more about the differences between online and traditional banks, and how to use online banking.

I try to pay over the minimum but all I seem to get is a higher interest rate or my credit line cut. I have not been using those cards for months. I try to keep my use to minimum with one since I have been trying to get out of debt. I feel stuck!!! Anyone have ideas?

I'm thinking of moving 16,000 from 401k to a Roth IRA. I realize I will have to pay $4000 in taxes (in cash--to avoid 10% penalty) to do so.

Do I need to covert to traditional IRA and THEN to a Roth. If so, is there a length of time it has to be in the Tradional IRA before converting.

And, finally...what i really want to know. How much of the 16,000 converted can i withdraw from the Roth without penalties? I know you can withdraw up to your contibutions in a "regular" Roth, but what is considered my "contributions" in this case?

BASICALLY -- can i turn 16,000 from my 401k into 16,000 in Roth IRA money and turn it into everyday cash to use?

I would like to take some money of out my 401k, but I don't want to do a loan.
