I recently was put in charge of payroll at my job, and can't quite seem to wrap my head around converting hours into decimals. We break it down to 1/4 hours. Math is like a foreign language to me! If there was some sort of converter that I could, say, put in the time someone clocked in, and the time they clocked out, and then it would tell me that they worked (for example) 7.75 hours. Are there any software programs that will accomplish this for me? Or maybe a website with some sort of javascript? Or maybe an excell formula? I am at the mercy of technology!

I have thought up a product which is fairly easy to manufacture and has a pretty good shot at steady sales. I'm not after "great wealth," and I am not an engineer or a manufacturer [I'm a college professor of ancient history] and would prefer to sell the whole package outright. I know what I would like to get, but I have no idea if it is a fair price or not.

Hi,

I have been wondering about this recently as every time you go into an electrical retailer, the salesperson always says they own what you are looking at.

If this is true then they must be paid millions!!!!

to anyone other than our employers, but every time we turn around there is someone else asking for it. Cell phone companies, doctors, the gas company, the electric company, the water company, etc. It is crazy if you think about the number of times each day someone asks for your social security number. So what's the deal? Why have we been told for years we don't have to give this number to anyone other than our employers. I tried to refuse to give this once and was told I had to provide it. Does anyone know the rationale or logic behind this?

I was cleaning some old files and found an 8 month old check from a company I did some work for as an independent contractor. The check did not have a "cash by" date on it, so I deposited it into my bank.

The check did not clear, payment was stopped. The reason why it was not immediately cashed (not that it matters) was because I was very ill for the 2 1/2 months after that check was issued, and I simply forgot about it. The company knew I was very ill, but instead of calling me about it, they stopped payment.

I have emailed them to issue another check, but got no response. I looked at my 1099 form, and they declared this as money paid to me, which means I must pay taxes on it. The taxes will be several hundred dollars.

My email was very professional and nice, but now I'm PO'ed. Am I wrong, or am I entitled to this money? What should I say in the letter I am writing them? Or, should I just have my attorney write them a letter?

i work at a hotel as a night auditor.not long ago,i tried to get switched to days, but was denied after a long process in which they let me work some days because they needed the help, but said they didn't think i had the "personality" to do it full time.this is based on the fact that in my personal life i'm more reserved,& because of a personality quiz they have you take when hired.now,at work,i'm as outgoing as i need to be,because that's my job,but they somehow don't think i can't adapt.i also had a bad shop call, but they said that was no big deal because i'm an auditor, but then use it as a reason why i can't do days.i've seen two people get promoted, one twice, even though they had signifigant faults to their credit.one smoked pot with another employee on the clock,& had to have me relieve them because they came to work hung over.another was habitually late & called in one day because of a fight with a boyfriend.my gm is a nice women, but blissfully unaware...any advice?

By this i mean, how much would it cost to form a US business and run it for one year, assuming the business did NOTHING - just sat there.

Basically I am looking for a rough estimate of the set up costs, and yearly reporting and compliance costs.
