I have had considerable experience paying HOA fees and even took one group to court some years ago because they misused the funds to go to Hawaii with the wife and kiddies.. Most of those idiots are creeps/corrupt and I want to get in to put a stop to it.

You ought to start by checking the by-laws for eligibility.

I've been a board member of a housing co-op, and once you get past the eligibility requirements, the biggest single attribute that you need is the ability to put your own agenda behind you and look at the big picture, at all times. Don't play favourites. Work within the by-laws and the laws of the land as part of a management group. Remember that although you are not a professional, you need to act at all times in a professional manner.

This is generally an elected position. Always remember that you are the representative of the people who voted for you, and that you serve at their discretion. It's not a right to do so, but a privilege.

Uusually the biggest busybodies who like to tell everyone else how to live in their own homes make the best HOA board members. If you have an eye for your neighbor's grass being a millimeter too high, his flower arrangements aren't exactly how you like them, or his blinds are just the wrong shade of white, then you'd make a perfect board member.

You'll be despised and ridiculed, but hey, what's that in the light of your home value going down $500 because the jerkoff across the street doesn't cut his grass every 4.3 days like he's supposed to?
