I use a discount broker to buy and sell shares on line and I think I might like to try put and call options. I am not an accountant or anything and I would like to learn about this kind of investing in simple language.

I am not on either coast. I am in the Midwest. It seems that around here it is rumored to bring down the cost rather than add to it because of repair, upkeep...etc.

For the last two years and some months, I worked as a self employed contractor. The company I worked for gave me a 1099 miscellaneous at the end of each tax year.

Well, at the end of the first year, I filed my taxes. I am still paying on them in monthly installments.

Well, I got my 2nd year's 1099 miscellaneous, and never filed my taxes. The deadline was in April 2007 of course. It is now July.

My income for each year was less than $17,000. I got ripped a new one when I filed my taxes the first year of this job.

I have never been audited before.

I no longer work for the same company, and will never get another 1099 miscelaneous from them. I am thinking about letting this go, and avoiding filing my taxes for the second year at all. I simply can't afford them. If you are considered self employed, you get such a huge tax bill it's unbelievable.

Does anyone have any idea, what are the chances of my getting audited for this?

I signed a lease that states rent as $1,300 with a maximum of 4 people living in this house. However, we are paying $1,200 because the landlord "meant" to change it to $1,200, but couldn't using the lease she printed off the net. So far, there are 3 of us living here, splitting up the $1,200 rent. We are in the process of getting a 4th roommate, only to find out that the landlord says she will increase rent to $1,500 to cover their mortgage if the 4th person moves in. The lease states nothing about raising rent. Is this legal? I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan and have been trying to find legislation on this. Please help!

I'm a master's student in German and want to make some money by translating for students at my university who need sources (for a research paper, thesis, dissertation, etc.) translated from German. I already did this for one student who was referred to me by one of my professors, and he was very pleased with my work. Now I want to advertise so I can get more clients. What should I put on the flyers?

My mom always does my taxes, and this year she said she was going to claim me and my son so she would'nt have to do as much paper work and she'd just give me the money. She gave me five hundred at first and said she only got a grand and didn't want to give it to me all at once. Does this sound shady, and is she even lying about the amount because I wouldn't know?

The IRS rejected the W7 for my non-resident alien spouse because the notarized copy of her passport did not include an apostille. She is from China, so I'm not sure they will issue an apostille, or if so, that the IRS will accept. What is the best way to get a certified document they will accept?

I am 28 and have saved $35K in IRA CDs. The broker at my bank tells me this is ridiculous for someone my age because the CD interest rate basically gets cancelled out by inflation. Should I switch to mutual funds b/c of my age? I understand that he can diversify it between low and high risk. But I worked very hard to save this money and am afraid of losing it. How much actual risk is involved? Should I keep any amount in CDs? Is he right? Thank you.
