No one at the IRS can seem to understand or answer my question.
I owe about $400 in back taxes.
I filed my tax return for 06 and actually ended up oweing $42. I have never owed before and usually got around $600 in refunds (which they later took to pay back taxes).
However, filing this time it never said I had a refund, just that I owed $42.
I filed online and I'm wondering if their system saw I owed the back taxes and just immediately took the refund and applied it and that left me a balance of $42?
In the past they always showed me a refund amount and then later applied it to the back taxes. This time it didn't even show me a refund amount.
Any ideas?

I'm going to start an IRA. I don't know who I should invest with or what I should invest in. My boss uses T Rowe Price and invests in mutual funds in pharmaceuticals. I was thinking of using them and finding something in stem cell research. I don't even know if I know what I'm talking about. What do you think? What are you doing for retirement?

I owe a lot of student loans (almost $200,000). Im not interested in paying off the loan or the balance. The best payment plan I could get was $2,000 a month. As a result the IRS withholds my tax refund every year which comes out to about $1,500 a year. In the past I claimed exemption because I was a grad student and made well under the maximum in actual income. Now im not qualified to claim exemption, and there is a $500 penalty that could be assessed if I do claim exemption. Could I claim exempt this year and just pay the $500 penalty if assessed at the end of 2007??? It seems cheaper then the $1,500 the goverment would just keep anyway and would allow me to keep $1000 extra this year as well as having the use of my money that was with held through out the year anyway? I only want to know about the TAX aspect of the issue. Yes i know all the things they can do in my state in regards to collection of the loan.

He lost his job while he was in jail for charges that were dropped. Since we were already behind on bills, I'm afraid we are going to lose our house. Both he and I have been aggresively searching for employment for the past two weeks, but we need something immediately. What can we do?

My friend's employer swapped them to a new health insurance plan and has already started charging them the premiums even though there's no coverage yet. Some kind of "paperwork problems." He's about to get charged for the second nonexistent month of coverage. So that's $600 in the hole in return for... nothing.

Is there any way this could possibly be legal?

Of course he's already planning to talk to the local Labor department if he doesn't get a refund, but I thought I'd toss it out here too.
