As far as your 2006 return is concerned, time stopped on 12/31/06. Whatever happens after is irrelevant and does not effect the return.

You should be able to get the credit for your 5yr old, but not the baby. You can't claim the baby unless it was born on Dec. 31st or earlier (basically any time DURING that tax year, in this case 2006). You'll be able to claim the baby next year though, even though it wasn't there the whole year.

You'll get the credit for your 5 year old. Since the new baby wasn't born until after 2006, you can't get the credit for him on your 2006 return no matter when you file it.

For your 2006 return, you can get the $1,000 child tax credit for your 5 year old. Your soon to be newborn won't be claimed until you file your 2007 return.
