I frequently look at www.bankrate.com and www.money-rates.com trying to find the highest paying cd's, however I sometimes find that my local Kentucky area newspapers has ads from local banks that offer as high or higher rates than are shown on bankrate or money-rates.
Example: Right now, Lexington KY Guardian Savings Bank has ad that it is now offering in newspapers 5.60% APY for a 5-month $500 min. CD, and by calling Fifth Third Bank in my town I found 9-month, $500 min., that is paying 5.20% APY..........but bankrate nor money-rates is showing these good deals.
How can I find WHEN local banks are having these good deals, except by checking local newspapers or calling these local banks?

I just got a notice from some collections agency called Portfolio Recovery Associates in Virginia stating that I owe them $4200 on a debt I supposedly owe to MBNA/ Bank of America in the amount of $1500 from 2003. It stemmed from an account overdraft protection that was put on my account in 2000. The banker that opened my college checking account offered the service and I said it sounded okay, he then said that I would receive some paper work that I needed to sign in order for that service to begin. I got the contract and looked it over and did not sign or return it. I remember not paying the charges because I never signed a contract saying that I would accept. Do I owe and if so, why. What are my possible defenses?

I could essentially have the same provider for auto insurance all of my life. Why is health insurance so heavily linked to one's employer? It would much easier so have the same health insurance for years or decades so no worry about pre-existing conditions when changing employers and health plans. With more competition, rates would be lower. Employers could still offer employees some health insurance money to cover premiums as a benefit. I'm not advocating socialized medicine as I don't believe the gov't is very effecient at running any sort of program.

I made arrangements with a debt collector to pay off a balance in 3 monthly installments. The arrangement was sent to me in writing by fax. All payments were to be taken out of my checking account with postdated checks. The first payment was made with no problems. However, due to financial difficulties, I could not make the second payment. I made several attempts to contact the collector with no success. No one returned my phone calls. I never received the required mail notification of the collector's intent to withdraw the funds on the next date. So, I placed a stop payment on the second check. I just discovered they deposited the third check, which wasn't to be deposited until 2/15. However, they did change the deposit date on the check.

My next step is to contact the FTC and find out how to pursue this. As of now, I am livid. I am in a situation where my account could be overdrawn, and I have very little money. Anyone believe this was a violation of the Act?

Ok - so my boyfriend works in Edinburgh, I work in Glasgow. We live (together) in Glasgow. The two cities are about 50 miles apart - it takes him about an hour to commute (an hour and a half door to door) each way. Not ideal.

SHould we buy somewhere for a year half way? While on paper this sounds ideal, we will actually spend £1200 ( about $2400) a year MORE if we both need to commute. Not to mention the legal fees, survey, building insurance etc etc.

He wants to work in Glasgow, because I am tied here for the next 2 and a half years...which is why we are only wanting to move for a year.

It's likely that the house we buy will increase by £6000 - £8000 over the next year (but of course we can't be sure - just guessing due to past performance...risky I know).

My question - would we actually make anything? What happens when you sell a house? HOw much does that cost? I can't find any info on that....

Here is the situation....My spouse and I are separated and I want to file married-separate. She wants to file jointly. I refuse to file jointly with her due to the fear that I will not receive my share of our return (she's that deceiving) . Here is the problem....she will not give me her social security number, which is information that I need in order to file separate. Tells me that if I don't file jointly, then I won't be filing. Any ideas on what avenue I can take to get my taxes filed separate? Thanks in advance for any replies.
