Amway/Quixtar is a company who's ship has sailed. Back in the days when the baby boomers had a houseful of kids and needed to find ways to cut costs, Amway came through for them.
They experienced hyper-growth many years ago, meaning the huge incomes have already been made.
They are the pioneers of the Multi Level Marketing world, they paved the way for other companies, but they really blew it with their cult-like attitude of recruiting. I remember trying to purchase a set of pots and pans from an Amway rep, who refused to sell them to me unless I enrolled. That wasn't going to happen so they lost the sale and felt they did the right thing.
Most people run for the hills when you even mention Amway which is one of the reasons they changed their name.
They were secretive about their meetings, would invite people to a presentation, then spring it on them that it was Amway.
I disagree 100% with their tactics and would never get involved.
If you are looking to make extra money from home, you have to go with the trends, namely the baby boomers and what they are looking for now. They are looking for health and anti-aging. Most are empty nesters now and no longer want to fill their homes with a bunch of products they cannot use, nor do they want to recruit others to do that either.
Nutrition is fast becoming a trillion dollar industry as most boomers suffer from a myriad of auto immune dysfunctions.
I market a product that comes with medical validation, which is important to them, but most importantly, it really works. Because of the excellent performance of this product, it sells itself. The company has taken the time to update their compensation plan making it very easy to earn a lucrative income, and put all the tools in place to help us every step of the way. Think modern here and choose something a little more cutting edge.

Is it possible? Yes. People have obviously done it. The trouble is that Amway has gotten such a bad rap over the years. In fact, I often think the whole Quixtar offshoot was just an attempt to change the name.

Anyway, the name, the required purchases and the sign up cost (there used to be one...perhaps not anymore) are all hurdles you'll have to overcome when selling someone on the concept.

I actually am in Network Marketing and have attended several Amwyay/Quixtar recruiting meetings. I liked the concept but didn't understand why the up front cost other than to line the pockets of the upline members.

I'm with a company called SFI. It is free to join, no inventory to keep, no billing, and you get a free website. Best of all, there are no required purchases although most people make a purchase because the prices are so great.

If you are going to run a home business, I strongly suggest you get a membership in the IAHBE, International Association of Home Business Entrepreneurs. I joined and it has helped me so much. Each month you get articles, audios, free software downloads, free magazine of the month, free book of the month and probably some other stuff I'm forgetting right now.

I've put three links below. Check them out.

yes, it is a MLM company like Amway but the best thing about it is it's chocolate that is actually healthy for you! Research it before you get into it and if you are willing to put in a lot of time and effort in the beginning it will pay off. My friend who recruited me is making about 1000.00 a month and she has been in it less than a year - but she works hard at it. Myself, I haven't invested much time but love eating the chocolate!. Whatever you do, if you get involved don't buy every CD or promotional material there is or you will soon find yourself in a deficit. Pick a couple things are your style and use them and stick with them. Good luck.

It's kind of hard these days I hear since Amway is a saturated market. Sorry If I offended you.

Yes, but it's a mistake to think of it as a get-rich-quick scheme. If you find products you like, and are good value for you then chances are others will feel the same way. It's like a wholesale buying club for those who've joined as IBOs, but ordinary punters can register simply to buy product.
