i hear a lot about not using your credit card on the internet.....
a few facts for you:
- on the majority of sites your credit card details are entered on secure pages, passed straight to the bank for authorization and a return code is sent to the site you are purchasing from, they dont even see your credit card (examples are sites where you are transfered to worldpay or ccbill etc)
- when you use your card at the local petrol station, youve handed your card to the sales assistant who now has your details, at the end of the working day the credit card machine does what is called an "end of day" where all the transactions for the day are sent to the bank to collect the money and the machine spits out a list of all of the credit cards used that day.
so the shift manager has your details, the shift manager puts the details into the safe, a few days the letter the manager/book keeper takes these details (they now have them too) and does the books, they take all of these receipts and store them in a filling cabinet for safe keeping until the end of the tax year.... so now the accounts are due and everythings sent off to the accountants office, where between 1-100 people have access to your details
obviously this isnt the exact scenario for what happens but its a rough idea........ oh yeh and dont forget the credit card receipt you got when you made your payment which you rolled up in a ball and threw into the bin for everyone to see :)
online payments on the whole are much safer as you dont enter your pin number, your card cant be cloned fully as they need to read the magnectic strip for a full clone and generally because there is much less human interaction.

I wouldn't even think about it! The entire Internet will have access
to whatever you make public. I had my credit card # stolen after
paying bills on line.
