I recently closed on my house, and was thinking about applying for store credit (e.g. Home Depot, etc)? Is it "safe" to apply now that I have closed on my house and have the keys?

I swear the freaking fire whistle goes off in my town like twice a day on average and it sounds like a freaking huge wounded duck. with all the technology out there these days shouldn't they be able to use freaking pagers or cell phones when there is a fire. Thank god I live 7 blocks from the horn instead of one block. I hope the whistle doesn't go off someday when I'm trying to sell this house.

I'm about to start a new job where I'll have use of a company car. I don't have all the details from the company yet, but I'm wondering about a few things. If I drive it to and from work, is it considered additional income? What if I need to run a personal errand while I'm driving it for work? Am I entitled to expense my receipts for car washes and other maintenance? What else do I need to know? I don't want to commit a faux-pas right off the bat!

I'm a 35yo single male, I own my own home and I have about $12000 in a money market paying 4.65 apy. Also i have two CD's each for $2000 5.35% apy for nine months. My mortage is 6.74% apr ( I owe $63k, purchased house at $86k two years ago). I also have about $16k in a retirement mutual fund which I have calculated has paid a disappointing 5 % over the last 7 yrs. My question is this. These investments (cd's and money markets) are super safe because of FDIC. And I like a sure thing even though I've heard often that when your younger u should have more risk in your portfolio than when u r older. Are there investments that would pay slighty more and be slightly more risky but not too risky. Perhaps municipal bonds? I also like the liquidity of CD's and money market accounts so I wouldn't want to give up all that much liquidity.

if i were to buy an old tractor and trailor and teach people to drive so they could get their CDL and get a better paying job.

i imagine finding the right kind of students would be the most difficult problem. i dont want freeloaders who wont do anything with the skills i will be investing my time and money in giving them. ...id like people who are trying to make it but just cant and need some extra help. maybe some churches could help me locate these type of people.

what do you think about this? would i get any tax breaks or anything like that because this would be for charity? do you think the students would benefit from something like this?

I would like to be in control of my own charity but i dont want to waste my time and money. ...so what do you think?

Sometimes I am straight out busy at work, and others, like now, I am not. I am completely organized and all of my work is caught up. It's a very small office.
What could I do to take advantage of this extra time???
Does not have to be work related.

Invest, how do I go about doing this? For instance, do I have to get someone to invest for me, or could I do it myself? Also, when one is investing, do they choose something very popular with consumers, and then invest in that stock? For instance, I know that cell phones are very popular among people of all ages, especially us college students. So, would I just choose a cell phone company...like Sprint, and then contact them, or a stock broker? I know I am probably way off base, but all these get out of debt books, recommend investing in something...but the way it's explained is confusing. My question would probably take forever to answer, so if anyone could recommend good books or websites that I could learn the process from, then i'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
