It is a fact that 1 + 1 = 2, but it is not a proven fact that snow is white.

Imagine a world in which no humans exist. The only sentient beings that exist are animals and they are unable to discern what the cosmic point of an evil act is. Suppose that a lightning bolt strikes a tree which in turn starts a fire from which a fawn cannot escape. Not only does the fawn die in the fire; it also suffers an agonizing death. God could have prevented the agonizing death of the fawn or prevented its suffering. But he did not. What good came out of this death? Was the death of the fawn not a gratuitous or pointless instance of evil? How would you address "Rowe's fawn"? I have actually reworked the problem with my own scenario.

"nature"

the trees never question mother nature
the grass always follows the seasons and the wind
the mountains never are proud
they stand in all there majesty
but never question the sky
man forms opinions and recycles everything
man questions the existance of something
that is greater than he, but is quick to place
all things below him
man doesnt mind the absensce of seasons
rationality or temperance
he is unatural, but not supernatural

Is it possible that beyond genetics and environment that belief or non-belief is achievable through a process of reason? Is belief only the result of family and upbringing or is there some choice made as an adult to accept or refute the beliefs passed down by genetics and environment based on sound thought and serious reflection?

I'm taking an ethics class and the more I learn about philosophers, the more I feel they are just self rightous individuals. Take Kant for instance, he believed God didn't exist because you couldn't prove he existed. Then there was Socrates, who killed himself. Why do we hold these people on such high regard?
The conclusions drawn from the "Enlightenment" era seem just common since to me, with regards to how we should treat each other (which I learned from the Bible).
As far as people believeing we didn't start to think for ourselves before the Enlightenment (or at least the ones that don't believe in God, therefore Divine law and direction doesn't exist), how do you suppose we came up with the 10 Commandments and other laws of religous beliefs that teach us how to behave in society. If there isn't a God (which I know there is one), then who was coming up with all these rules that governed mankind before the Enlightenment. Someone must have been "enlightened" before then.
