Because they are not smart enough to do so.

Because knowledge is power.
If you know someone who knows more about you than you would like them to, that gives them power over you because they know how you will react in certain situations, therefore they would be able to use their power over you to get you to do what they want you to do. Hence why so many television dramas have story lines involving blackmail.
But ignorance is bliss.
This however could be argued. Because being ignorant could lead to people being hurt.
Look at a lot of big religions like the Catholic Church for example. Is that not one person with knowledge leading a lot of people who choose to be ignorant.
I read an eye opening verse from the Delia Lama yesterday at a local school market. It was basically saying that true religion is not about finding fault in others, it was about finding fault in yourself and improving yourself.
The good thing about knowledge though is you can use it for good. Like remembering birthdays and anniversaries and dates that are special to other people. Whereas the ignorant person would not remember these special dates and therefore the person/people on the receiving end of this ignorance would be hurt because they would feel that the ignorant party does not care enough to remember.

If you are talking about those of us who are Americans, then it is true that culturally there has been an anti-intellectual current for many, many decades. IMHO, it stems from the individualism required to displace the Original Immigrants from the land and then settle it as farmers and ranchers. The ability to build, keep a family together, raise children and generally prosper without access to a formal education made it seem possible that lack of a formal education, or a limited one, was no hindrance to the flourishing of people in general.

I think they have misunderstood something or are unwise not to understand the world of academic excellence or in-depth knowledge in any advanced fields of studies in universities or modern corporations worldwide. I don't think it makes sense to me or some true scholars/learners whose thirst for knowledge is satisfied by means of studying fom K-12 and bachelor's to advanced degrees or research studies. They should have scolded other issues instead.

because they are trying to unveil what mankind was not meant to unveil/does not deserve to unveil. Or they are going against what the criticizers are used to. Take Galileo for example. He shows that those in the pursuit of knowledge should not be stopped until one has fully considered both the negatives and positives of their motives. In my opinion, humankind should never try to take more than they should when it comes to the pursuit of knowledge. Knowledge can be dangerous. Especially in the careless hands of humanity. Knowledge can lead to both bad and good outcomes. However, good knowledge can be used to do bad, but the same can go for a "negative" knowledge. Humans always tend to find ways to turn knowledge into something bad, to use it in bad ways. We are but only this. Undone this can never be.

We live in a age where clamouring for fame and material wealth is a social norm. Someone who does otherwise challenges that notion. Therefore, the presence of that person makes those who conform to the social norms feel insecure, because it makes their values and raison d'etre seem shallow and futile.
And that pisses them off to no end.

I really do not think people are upset because you want knowledge. I have never been made fun of because I wanted to learn something. Maybe, you are trying to rub your knowledge in their face and that hurts them.
If you are simply being made fun of because you want to learn then who cares? I would not stop studying because I got picked on.

If they are wise then it is because knowledge is power and they don't wish to share, so they are evil and you should not heed them. If they are not wise, they they are just repeating that which they have heard from the mouths of evil men, and you would do well to avoid them also.

Envy! Pure and simple, they envy your quest for knowledge. You may become more knowledgeable than they are. That, people don't like.
