my english teacher always tells us (like twice a week) that in Literature, a storm symoblizes bad things going to happen. Basically, the ominous storm clouds. A great example is in Lord of the Flies a storm builds up for many chapters and when it finally hits one of the boys is killed.

I was always under the belief that a storm symbolizes a time of pain and/or undue stress and a possible change soon to come, and a tornado or hurricane symbolized a time of change that was soon near (i.e. "winds of change".) that would clear out the old facets of your life to make way for new, productive things to enter your life.

An opportunity to trust God. As a child the storms would frighten me. Until they started causing me to sleep, and that taught me to trust God. I was always grateful to wake, alive and well after a storm had passed.
