my band teacher asked if any flute players was willing to switch to Tenor Sax since the flute section is crammed... Is there a big difference in it? I mean, notewise....? I am an excellent flutist... I just wanted to know what it felt like to play something besides a flute.

thanks for your help!

I've been playing my clarinet for 11 years now; it's a plastic Bundy clarinet. Now that I'm in college though (as a music ed major) , my professor told me that I really should invest in a good wooden clarinet. I know I should have gotten a wooden one sooner, but my parents didn't see the point of having 2 clarinets... Yeah, they're not big music people lol. So, my question: I really want a well-working advanced wooden clarinet. I know Buffet is a respectable brand, but what type of Buffet (or other brand) should I be looking into?

Please, HELP!

My 4th grade daughter is joining the school band. The school doesn't provide the instrument so we have to purchase one... ASAP since band starts next week!

Looking on the net, I'm reading things that I have NO CLUE as to what I should get:

1. Plated vs Non-Plated & IF plated, silver vs nickel

2. Open Hole vs Closed Hole

3. Key of C? (What does that mean? Are there flutes that AREN'T "Key of C"?

4. Offset G Keys

5. Split E Mechanism

Any others that I may be missing?

What brands are good... that are INEXPENSIVE? Recommendations? My daughter currently takes piano lessons & I don't want to buy her an expensive flute just in case she decides that she doesn't like flute at all.

Brands that I found online are Armstrong, Artley, Cecilio, Glen Edward, Oxford, Rosetti, Simba and Yamaha.

Any brands that I should stay away from?

By the way, the music teacher says my daughter has long fingers for playing the flute.

Thank you very much!

okay, so i've decided to learn the violin.... or the viola... :S
i really got passionate about learning and just listening to the music, from watching La Corda d'Oro an instrumental anime... but that's beside the point.
what i understand now is that there are more leading parts for violin, and just more music in general than the viola. the violin is smaller, thus easier to hold. i don't really know how much music there is for viola, but i know it's an alto instrument, so it will have more harmonizing parts, that's what i don't like, and its bigger....
i'm leaning towards the violin, but i know that viola players are less common everywhere....
please help me!! any info and opinions would be great! ^_^

I'm looking for a guitar that's potentially for some shows... I want a guitar I can be proud of but not spend the money for a Martin or anything like that. Is it possible to get a decent 12-string or steel string acoustic for around $400? What models, brands, etc.? I've been looking at Ovation, Takamine, and (for no particular reason) Seagull.

I'm no longer in marching band, but I have a question that I never had answered. Both of my directors (high school and college) told me that I "kick my knees" when I marched. What in heck does that mean and how do you fix it? I want to know in case I work with a marching band in the future. Thanks!

For instance "Flight of the bumble bee," or "the elephant walk." If you don't know the artist or what it is called, how can you research it? I don't read music so I couldn't give you notes. The one I'm thinking of is a rapid staccato of notes punctuated at the end of each [stanza?] "line" by a slide trombone type noise. Someone had told me they thought it was from "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" but I have no clue. Any ideas?
