I suggest renting an instrument before buying one, for several reasons. First, you don't want to invest a few hundred dollars and then decide you don't like it. Second, you don't want to invest a few hundred dollars in an instrument that ends up being a piece of crap because you didn't know what you were looking for. Rent for a few months; then you'll have an idea of what a violin should sound like, feel like, and play like.

Any local music store should be able to rent you a violin, probably for around $20 a month. A good violin will cost you upwards of $400 for a basic student instrument, so definitely wait until you're sure before buying one. If there are no local music stores, you can rent from some places online - http://www.stringworks.com is one of them.
