The book was written by a female cultural studies professor and has a picture of a pretty blonde girl - about 20-28 - working as a convenience store clerk on the cover. The supplementary title is along the lines of "my year as a convenience store clerk," but I have no clue what the full title is so I can't find it. It discusses the comparative racial perceptions in Boston and Atlanta as seen from the perspective of a white convenience store clerk. I have tried to search for it on Amazon, Borders.com, and BarnesandNoble.com using every possible combination I can think of without ANY success. I saw it at a local Borders, read a few pages, wanted to buy it but left my credit card at home, put it on hold, went back for it the next day, and found it had been sold to another customer. This book seems to have vanished into thin air. NOBODY has ever heard of this book and it was publised after 2002.I am desperate to read it so if you know the name of the book or the author, PLEASE HELP!!!

I've got a Civil rights worker character named Rune and I've gotten a lot of flack for that. Keep in mind, when I was 18, I thought the name was wicked awesome, as I was a wannbe goth girl back then. Is it too dungeons-and-dragons goth fantasy? Should I change it? It definitely wasn't in the top-10 back in 1939 (when he was born), that's for sure, but I know for damned sure I'm not going to name him John.

The elderly residents where I work also have cassette players and are losing their vision and would love to have talking stories on cassette of mysteries by Dorothy Gilman or Agatha Christie but what we all love, especially this time of year are suspence, not horror, ghost stories on cassette. I have found some in thrift stores but is there an inexpensive way to send for these before people just throw them out??? Please help.

I found it amazingly current and at times frightening. I occasionally wondered if it was fiction, esp with the author living such a clandestine life. Interested in anyone else's take on this fascinating book.

If you had to pick 1 (or 2-3) book(s) they someone should no miss out on reading what would it be? (name and author)

My own few I would recommend are:

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien (obvious but true)

The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (truely brilliant)

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom (A fantastic way to look at the meaning of your life)

The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb (actually the start of a 9 book series, a fantasy based novell that is brilliantly written)

Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan (not yet completed, but on a par with lord of the rings)

Please let me know what your favourites are and why :)

Our Last Fremstad Story

Any tale is anticlimatic after The Farewell, we ought to look i on (Olive) Fremstad as voice teacher, the occupation she took up, like many of her colleagues, upon her retirement. Fremstad was not a gentle coach. Only those with a spirit of iron could survive her course, for training included viewing the inside of a mysterious box that sat on the piano under a red silk scarf.

One day, Fremstad was about to unveil the secret for her secretary to see when a student showed up for a lesson.

"Don't!" the student screamed in terror. "I won't look at it again. I'd rather leave forever!"

"Leave then, poor child." said Fremstad. "Better now than disappointment and heartbreak later." Turning to her secretary as her student fled. Fremstad added, "She has no guts, that one. Opera is not for her." Then she showed the contents of the box to the secretary.

It was a human head, pickled and sliced in half from cranium to neck.
