Maya Angelou wrote a book called "I know why the caged bird sings." I was wondering what the book was about, and, why DOES the cage bird sing?

Thanks!

He read 'The Kite Runner', 'A Thousand Splendid Suns', and more recently, 'The Road'. He really enjoys reading when he has the chance. But of course, my taste is a little different than his!

Anyone have some good suggestions?

I was just invited to submit an article I have written to a magazine 'on spec'. There seems to be some discrepancy on this site as to what 'on spec' actually means and what it entails.
Is the usual procedure to: submit the article, if they like it they pay you for it and perhaps publish it. They cannot take the article on spec and publish it without your knowing or your being paid for it, right?
Her reasoning for submitting on spec was that they haven't dealt with me before, and the article is written in first person.

Kind of tricking them into reading more? The Alex Cross series have really short chapters but I think it's a good concept because it keeps the reader wanting to know more because the scene ended so quick. Do you agree?

Does this work with other genres? Do some genres/stories benefit from longer scenes? Or, does it depend solely on the story?
