Is it a good book? Is it any different from the movie or is it pretty similar?

A fascinating book, a history of gangs in the slums of Manhattan from the early 19th-century on, in great detail, with hundreds of stories that never find their way into conventional histories. It's a little dismaying to find Herbert Asbury claiming that the era of gangs is over -- this in 1927! -- but his book is about a different era and kind of criminality than the prohibition mobs. It should be fairly easy to find; my copy is a 1989 reprint.

Naturally, the film has been cobbled together from anecdotes from varied decades, and its history should not be taken literally, much less its addition of a rather unfortunate fictional plot.

The film was loosely based on the 1928 book, so I'd say it is different from the movie.

Like most books- it's better than the Movie (although the Leonardo DiCaprio character doesn't look quite as handsome... :) ).
